As I ventured into the compost heap, the air was filled with the earthy aroma of decaying organic matter. It was a hidden world teeming with life, a microcosm of nature's resilience amidst the backdrop of our urban landscapes. And there, amidst the remnants of our daily lives, I encountered them – the rats...

My camera became a bridge, connecting my human perspective to their rat existence. Through the lens, I observed their intricate social interactions, their grooming rituals, and their playful explorations of their surroundings. I witnessed their hierarchical structures, their communication through vocalizations and body language, and their remarkable ability to navigate and thrive in this complex environment.

​Their eyes sparkled with curiosity as they scurried about, their movements a testament to their innate agility and adaptability. Despite their reputation as scavengers, they exuded an air of innocence and playfulness, their actions driven by a primal instinct for survival.

In capturing these moments, I sought to challenge the prevailing stereotypes associated with rats. I wanted to portray them not as menacing pests, but as intelligent, social creatures, an integral part of the urban ecosystem. These are creatures that play a crucial role in the decomposition of organic matter, controlling populations of other rodents, and contributing to the overall health of urban environments.

​I vividly recall one particular encounter, where a young rat emerged from its burrow, its eyes wide with curiosity. It paused, its head tilted, as it caught sight of me. For a moment, our eyes met, and I felt a flicker of connection, a recognition of shared existence in this hidden world.
Another memorable moment was witnessing a mother rat meticulously grooming her offspring, a tender display of affection that dispelled any notion of rats as being cold or uncaring creatures

This rat was very curious of a mysterious man with a big old camera lens pointing at them!

Often overlooked, rats play a vital role in maintaining the delicate balance of urban ecosystems.
