With over 13,000 entries submitted, Fine Art Photographer Jacob J. Watson-Howland has won the
Botanical Britain category in the British Wildlife Photography Awards (BWPA) 2025 with his striking
image Streetlit Snowdrop. This achievement places him in the top 0.1% of photographers who
entered the prestigious competition.
The minimalist photograph captures a single snowdrop illuminated by a city streetlight, highlighting
its resilience and adaptability to Britain’s changing climate. Jacob used a Canon EOS R6 and a
Sigma 150-600mm lens to achieve his vision. Reflecting on the image, he said: “This botanical
wonder is one of Britain’s earliest blooms, signalling the changing seasons. Its modest elegance
inspired me to capture its beauty against an urban backdrop.”
Upon receiving the award, Jacob shared: “I’m delighted my snowdrop image reached this far in such
a prestigious competition. Flowers aren’t usually my subject of choice, so for it to be named the
best botanical photo of 2025 in Britain is beyond exciting!”
Jacob revealed that his submission almost didn’t make it due to a rule violation in post-processing.
“I received an email from Will Nicholls, the competition director, informing me that one editing tool I
used wasn’t allowed. Thankfully, I was given a chance to re-edit and resubmit just minutes before
the deadline.”
Will Nicholls praised Jacob’s work, stating: “With more than 13,000 images submitted to the
competition, this is a truly fantastic achievement.”
Jacob’s award-winning photograph will be exhibited across three UK locations in 2025:
• Nunnington Hall (Yorkshire): May 17 – July 13
• Nature in Art (Gloucestershire): July 22 – September 7
• Bishop Auckland Town Hall (County Durham): September 12 – November 30
