UNION JACK

The Union Jack is an iconic and controversial flag. To some people, it symbolises unity. To others, it symbolises imperialism. 

I seldom notice UK flags being displayed by citizens. It's much more uncommon than it used to be. I've noticed signals of patriotism most in less affluent areas. I had this in mind when venturing the streets of Old Hill, one of Cornwall's most deprived areas. 

To encapsulate the sense of place, I had to include a UK flag in the project. The challenge was now finding one. I spent days traversing the streets in search of one. It was elusive. 

After days of dead ends, I discovered one in the most unlikely of places. On the roof of a car. A Mini Cooper, to be exact. This was ideal. The British flag on a British car. 

I preferred this to an actual flag. It allowed me to get a unique angle, and the metallic material makes it pop. It's all about persevering. If you don't stop, you will have a decisive moment.
