LONESOME DIVERCORNWALL, UK, 2024

There are moments, some days, some times, in some places where all the cards align. Creating atmosphere an artist can only conjure up in their wildest dreams.
This winter morning, as I gazed towards the ferocious Atlantic as it shouted and screamed back at me with menace, was that exact moment. The rising sun beamed through cracks in the wall of clouds, casting a spectacular spotlight onto the gang of gannets as they dove into the depths to steal fish from the ocean. When conditions are this promising, the artist has to be on their A-game. There's no 'terrible weather', 'bad light', or 'boring scenes' covering your inadequacies as a safety blanket of excuse. No. It's your responsibility to perform. Adding a layer of pressure like a hydraulic press. You either live up to the moment or get swept away by it. On this morning, I breathed the pressure and enjoyed myself. When conditions are this good, I stick to the basics even more so than usual. I knew I wanted to make a print of a Gannet against the vast, open expanse of the Ocean. All I had to do was to stick it out long enough for my vision to become a reality. I came back with one frame. That's all I needed. Photography without emotion is nothing. When I look back at this image, it evokes memories of standing on the cliffs, witnessing the dramatic power of our Oceans. The sound of waves thumping onto rock, the howl of the wind sweeping over the water, the sight of Gannets crashing into the sea. It's nature's finest hour. |
"ON THIS MORNING, I BREATHED THE PRESSURE AND ENJOYED MYSELF. WHEN CONDITIONS ARE THIS GOOD, I STICK TO THE BASICS EVEN MORE SO THAN USUAL.
